The Deputy Minister of the Interior and Police, Javier Issa, pointed out, during an-interview on September 9 of this year, that, considering the honors awarded by third parties in order to increase the grades of police officers and their likelihood to obtain a promotion, were considered mechanism which led to corruption.
Such statement arises from the fact that, on several occasions in the past, irregularities were found due to the purchase of false honors and awards by police officers, which were allegedly granted by authorities both in the cities and rural areas, with the aim of obtaining promotions and better positions within the police force.
In order to solve this problem, the Deputy Minister of the Interior informed that they are currently working on a regulation, which will have the purpose of providing greater value to the merits of each police officer, and will reduce the merits of medals, certifications and honors that are usually received from third parties.
Consequently, promotions will be focused exclusively on the performance and the actions of the uniformed personnel, and no longer on the recognitions granted by means of medals and honors.
